The school day

From the first list to the last note

The day has the same eight blocks every time. Only the project and the elective change, so students always know what comes next.

  1. 01
    8:15

Step 1: Arrival and the day's list

Students hang up their coats, open the planner and write the day's list on the homeroom board: what is due, what is new, who needs a word with a teacher.

  2. 02
    8:30

    Step 2: Humanities

A long block for reading, writing and discussion. Students read together, write in a notebook and talk about what they read, in their grade's room.

  3. 03
    10:00

    Step 3: Math

One lesson, then work at the table with the teacher moving between students. Anyone can ask for a second explanation at the board.

  4. 04
    11:15

    Step 4: Planning time

Forty-five minutes in the middle of the day to look at the list, start homework and ask a teacher the question that came up in the morning.

  5. 05
    12:00

Step 5: Lunch and open room

Families send lunch. We eat together in the commons, and the open room stays quiet for anyone who wants a break first.

  6. 06
    12:45

    Step 6: A project

Science on Monday and Wednesday, a history seminar on Tuesday and Thursday, and on Friday a project that gathers up the week.

  7. 07
    2:15

    Step 7: An elective

Art, music or woodworking in the studio, depending on the day. Students move at their own pace and finish what they began.

  8. 08
    3:00

Step 8: A note home, then dismissal

Each student writes two lines for home about the day. A teacher reads the note, and families wait at the front door.

Projects

Hands on, with a teacher at the table

The afternoon project is the longest block after lunch. Students work in pairs on a bench or around a table, and the teacher moves between them.

On Friday the group sets up a table of what it made that week, and the whole floor walks around it.

  • Science at the lab bench on Monday and Wednesday

  • A history seminar around one table on Tuesday and Thursday

  • A Friday table of the week's work
